Illuminated icebergs bathed in color from the magnificent firework show, in one of nature's most spectacular surroundings, creates an extraordinary experience for spectators. The fireworks show at Jökulsárlón lagoon is an annual event that repeats every August when the days are still long in Iceland and the weather allows to camp by the lagoon.
The number of visitors has been escalating every year and the last few times well over thousand visitors have arrived to enjoy the show.
We learned about the show when we were visiting Skaftafell national park and we decided to camp with our Pikachu-van by the lagoon that night so we can see the fireworks.
We arrived early and the organizers were still placing candles on top of the broken icebergs. Some people had already prepared by finding the best spot. Iceland is a camper's paradise so it's often that you see large vans with all the required accessories like chairs and tables.
The show is a collaboration between the Hornafjordur search and rescue association, Jokulsarlon boat trips and the Vatnajokull Region. Entrance fee is 1000 ISK and free for ages 12 and younger. All proceeds go to the Hornafjorður search and rescue association.
The preparation for the show starts during the day when the organizers sail between the icebergs and arrange 150 candles on them. Then the candles are lit and the fireworks show starts at 11 pm when fireworks are shot up from different locations in the lagoon.
Make sure you camp overnight by the lake to enjoy the breathtaking scenery and peacefulness of the area!
