The day before the name day of Saint Donatos, at the small church named after the Saint, near the village of Egklouvi in Lefkada island, the festival of lentils takes place.

Yes, you got that right. Lentils. The lentils grown here are very famous throughout Greece and for no wrong reason. These green lentils have a spectacular taste, nothing similar to any other lentils I have tried so far. The quantities are very limited and the local growers will tell you that you shouldn't buy these lentils elsewhere, like Athens, as they are probably not authentic and the ones selling them want to profit.

The price of these lentils in the market is probably ten times the price of the normal ones. I don't know whether the price justifies the product, but it is certainly justified by the limited production and respective demand.

Everyone was chilling by the church and some were attending the Mass. The food is served only after church is done. In the meantime there were many small vendors with toys for children, roast corn and more around. There was also a well where you could get some water to drink out of the bucket.

At the same time, the cooks were preparing the lentils in huge pots.

Many people attended the Mass, or at least entered the church to light a candle and support the local community. After the church finished the Mass, people moved to the opening set with tables, had the delicious lentils and enjoyed local traditional dancing and music.
